Travelling in Tagawa

Photography Exhibition by Anne Virta

I travelled to Japan with a Finnish dance theatre group as a photographer in August 2009. Tove Jansson's work and Finnish children's culture were introduced in Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and the “Peeks into the Dancing Moominvalley” show for children was part of the festival. We had an honour to stay in a Japanese family in Tagawa, located near Fukuoka in Kyushu Island. It was magnificent, since travelling to Japan had been my dream since I was twelve!

Tagawa (Tagawa-shi) is surrounded by mountains, Mount Hiko in the south. One day we climbed up the stairs to the prestigious Shinto shrine in the holy Mount Hiko and I was touched by the breathtaking scenery of the mountain, the forest and the ancient surroundings. For centuries, people have visited the Hikosan Shrine to worship the God of safety in farming and mining. I want to share these beautiful views and the serene atmosphere with you in this virtual exhibition.
